The 2012 VVC D-J Motorcycle Rally
The
2012 DJ Motorcycle Rally The first Durban to Johannesburg “DJ” motorcycle race was held
in 1913 and continued with the last being held in 1936. Authorities at the
time deemed it too dangerous to race on public roads.
In 1969 the late Dick Osborne persuaded a group
of fellow enthusiasts to organise a commemorative DJ Run using the roads
that made up the route of the original race.
Only motorcycles old enough to have competed in
the last DJ in 1936 were eligible. This rule still applies although
changes have had to be made to the route over the years.
The DJ Run still takes place over two days with an overnight stop at
Newcastle, as was the case when it was a road race.
The first DJ commemorative rally took place in 1970. It has been
staged every year since – except for 1974 when the authorities refused
permission due to fuel shortages being experienced in South Africa at
the time.
Many famous makes from Britain's glorious motorcycle past take
part as well as other equally famous makes as detailed in the table
below.
A highlight
of the Classic Motorcycling Calendar is the annual Durban
to Johannesburg Memorial Run. It is a Reliability and Regularity
Trial over a total distance of approximately
700km. ---------------------------------- Click here for the DJ
